2025-05-28 IOF Overview for the CASCaDE Submission Team

Context

  • CASCaDE is an Object Management Group (OMG) Request for Proposal for submissions to become a standard

  • The OMG CASCaDE initiative aims to build a shared ontological foundation for modeling complex, multidisciplinary cyber-physical systems.

  • Their goals include:

    • Achieving semantic interoperability across modeling tools and domains

    • Supporting digital engineering throughout the system lifecycle

    • Clarifying the meaning behind system elements and interactions

  • CASCaDE spans:

    • Electronics • Fluidics • Mechanics • Software • Human interaction • Systems of systems

  • A distinction:

    • Standards like SysMLv2 or OWL offer neutral, formal semantics.

  • What’s still missing:

    • Real-world semantics—the actual entities, roles, functions, and processes that models are about.

  • That’s where IOF ontologies come in.
